BREAKING: Court nullifies Osun LG polls, sacks 30 chairmen, councillors
A Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo has nullified the state’s local government election conducted by the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC).
Newsflash Nigeria learnt that OSIEC conducted the election across the 30 LGAs in Osun amid low voter turnout on October 15.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) won all the seats in the 30 LGAs unopposed.
Prior to the election, Segun Oladitan, chairman of OSIEC, announced that only one political party signified an intention to contest the election.
He, however, did not mention the name of the political party that signified interest at the time.
The ballot paper used for voting was said to have not carried the logo of any political party, and only reflected ‘YES or NO’.
However, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) approached the court to stop OSIEC from conducting the election.
Nathaniel Ayo-Emmanuel, the presiding judge, held that the election was held in contravention of Sections 29 and 32 of the Electoral Act, 2022.
Justice Ayo-Nathaniel Emmanuel declared that the Local Government Election that was conducted by OSIEC on the 15th Day of October 2022 was ILLEGAL, NULL and VOID having not been conducted in consonance with the Electoral Act of 2022.
Court orders the LG Chairmen and Councillors of the said ELECTION to vacate Local Government Secretariats/Offices with immediate Effect.
