Benue Information Commissioner Kidnapped by Armed Men in Zaki-Biam
The Benue State Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Matthew Abo, has been kidnapped by unknown gunmen who stormed his residence in Zaki-Biam, the headquarters of Ukum Local Government Area, on Sunday night.
Newsflash Nigeria reports that the incident occurred around 10pm when the armed men arrived on four motorcycles and started shooting sporadically. They forced their way into the commissioner’s house and ordered everyone, including his wife and children, to lie face down.
The eyewitnesses said that the kidnappers made the commissioner sit behind one of the riders while another gunman sat behind him. They then sped off to an unknown destination with their victim.
The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Hyacinth Alia, Sir Kula Tersoo, confirmed the abduction of the commissioner to Newsflash Nigeria on Monday. He said that the governor had directed the security agencies to ensure his safe release from the kidnappers’ den.
Mr. Abo was among the 17 commissioners sworn-in as members of the Benue State Executive Council on August 29, 2023. He is in charge of information, culture and tourism in the state.
The motive behind his abduction is not yet clear, but some sources suspect that it may be related to political or personal issues. The kidnappers have not yet contacted his family or the state government to demand any ransom.
The kidnapping of the commissioner has raised concerns over the security situation in Benue State, which has been plagued by violence and conflicts in recent years. The state government has appealed to the public to remain calm and cooperate with the security agencies to ensure peace and order in the state.
