Amotekun Recruitment: Ex-Ekiti Speaker Faces Fraud and Attempted Murder Charges
A former Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Dele Olugbemi, and his accomplice, Tajero Adebayo, have been remanded in the Ado-Ekiti Correctional Centre by a Chief Magistrates’ Court over allegations of fraud and attempted murder.
The duo are facing a four-count charge of conspiracy, fraud, attempted murder and threat of violence for their involvement in a scam related to the recruitment of members into the Western Security Network, popularly known as Amotekun.
According to the police prosecutor, Inspector Caleb Leramo, the defendants committed the offences on February 24 and May 31 in Ado-Ekiti. He said they threatened and attacked one Chief Ogunyemi Aluko and another person who had paid them N400,000 for the recruitment of 80 members of their group into Amotekun at N5,000 per member.
However, none of the members were shortlisted into the security outfit. When Aluko demanded a refund of his money, Olugbemi allegedly used his former office to intimidate him and claimed to be a factional leader of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) in Ekiti State.
On May 31, Olugbemi and Adebayo reportedly stormed Aluko’s house with four armed thugs who assaulted him with guns, cutlasses and broken bottles. Aluko sustained injuries to his head and managed to escape from the scene.
The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 421, 329(1)(a), 241(a), and 46 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti, 2021. He asked the court to remand the defendants in custody pending legal advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecution.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr Saka Afunso, ordered the remand of the defendants in the Ado-Ekiti Correctional Centre and adjourned the case till July 3 for mention.
