AFCON: Zimbabwe to boycott opening match against Egypt

The Zimbabwe national team have threatened to boycott their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, opener against Egypt tonight over non-payment of players’ allowances by the country’s Football Association, ZIFA.

According to ESPN, the Warriors are currently in a dispute with ZIFA over an agreement on players’ welfare signed in May.

Sunday Chidzambwa’s men refused to train on Thursday ahead of their AFCON clash against the host nation on Friday night.

Asked to confirm that some members of Chidzambwa’s side had proposed a boycott, ESPN quoted a member of Zimbabwe’s travelling party as saying on Thursday: “They [ZIFA] haven’t paid. “We are still waiting.

“They promised everything [would be paid] tomorrow [Friday] morning.”

Zimbabwe are in Group A of this year’s AFCON along with Egypt, Uganda, and DR Congo.
