Adamawa Assembly elected PDP member as Speaker
The member representing Uba/Gaya state constituency in Adamawa State, Aminu Iya Abbas, has been elected speaker of the State House of Assembly.
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, lawmaker was elected Thursday during the inauguration of the 7th Assembly at the Assembly complex in the state capital, Yola.
The emergence of Abbas is considered by his party to be a major turn of event given earlier anxiety within the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which had been high up till Wednesday evening as four candidates had been contending for the position, with the possibility of splitting PDP votes.
The PDP has a slight majority in the 7th Assembly with 13 members as against the 11 by the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) which was able to narrow its contenders for the office of speaker to just one.
But on Thursday, Abbas of the PDP finally emerged Speaker unopposed first following the intervention of the party which made his fellow PDP contenders to step down and support him, and then the decision by the immediate past Speaker, Kabiru Mijinyawa of the APC, to quit the race for the position.
