Tinubu Warned Me That EFCC Job is Risky, Says Ola Olukoyede

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has revealed that President Bola Tinubu cautioned him that he was taking on a risky job when he was appointed as the head of the anti-corruption agency.

Olukoyede made this disclosure on Friday, during a courtesy visit to the Emir of Ilorin, Dr Ibrahim Sulu Gambari, at his palace in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State.

He said that Tinubu, who is the leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), told him that the EFCC job was one of the riskiest jobs that anybody could take. He said that he replied to Tinubu that he was not afraid of the risks, because he would be guided by the rule of law and the ethics of the profession.

“Before I was appointed the EFCC Chairman, President Tinubu told me that this appointment that I was about to take, is one of the riskiest jobs that anybody can take.
“I replied to him that it wouldn’t be hard because I am going to be guided by the rule of law and ethics of the profession”.

He also said that during his screening at the Senate, he told the entire nation that he had a three-point agenda for the EFCC, which are: to fight corruption, to recover stolen assets, and to prevent corruption. He assured the Emir that with these points, the EFCC would continue to serve the nation better without any intimidation or interference with the operation of any legitimate business.

“During my screening at the Senate, I told the entire nation that I am going to face a three-point agenda and I want to assure your royal highness that with these points, the EFCC will continue to serve the nation better without any intimidation or course to affect the operation of any legitimate business”

The Emir of Ilorin, who is also the Chairman of the Kwara State Council of Chiefs, expressed his full support for the EFCC and its core mandates of fighting crimes and criminality in the state.

He said that since the establishment of the anti-graft agency, he had never pleaded on behalf of anyone who had violated the law of the land. He said that he could not say that the government was wrong for doing the right thing in society.

“This is because I cannot say the government is wrong for doing the right thing in society”.

He also described Ilorin Emirate as a peaceful place and said that most people who carried out criminal acts were always outsiders and that the people of Ilorin often ended up being their landlords. He said that Ilorin Emirate was the gateway between the North and the South and that he was the gatekeeper.

“Ilorin Emirate is peaceful and you will discover that most people who carry out criminal acts are always outsiders and unfortunately, the people of Ilorin always end up being their landlords. Ilorin Emirate is the gateway between the North and the South and I am the gatekeeper.”

He further shared some of his experiences as the acting Director of Public Prosecution in the old Gongola State and stressed that a leader should not commit mistakes that were significant in the course of carrying out his or her duties.

He advised Olukoyede to remain focused and uphold the rule of law in the discharge of his duties as he promised during his screening at the Senate. He also prayed for his success in office.
