Bandits Kidnap Over 100 Zamfara Residents for Failing to Pay Harvesting Levies
Over 100 people from four communities in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State have been kidnapped by bandits who demanded N110 million as harvesting levies from them.
The affected communities are Mutumji, Sabongari Mahuta, Kwanar Dutsi and Unguwar Kawo.
According to Newsflash Nigeria, the bandits, led by one Damina, had given the communities two weeks to pay the levies or face the consequences. The communities had started raising the money when the bandits attacked them on Friday evening around 8 pm.
A resident of Mutumji, Alhaji Muhammad Usman, told Newsflash Nigeria that the bandits shot indiscriminately and forced the villagers to flee.
He said that his community was asked to pay N50 million, while the others were asked to pay N30 million, N20 million and N10 million respectively.
Another source from the area said that the bandits took away the kidnapped victims to an unknown destination. The State Police Command could not be reached for comment as of the time of filing this report.
This incident occurred a week after some villagers were abducted in Ruwandoruwa community of the same Local Government Area.
It also followed the killing of a Divisional Police Officer and some police officers in Maru town by the bandits earlier this year.
