BREAKING: Kano Governor Yusuf Challenges Appeal Court Verdict At Supreme Court
The governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, has filed an appeal at the Supreme Court to challenge the verdict of the Court of Appeal that sacked him from office.
Yusuf, who contested the governorship election under the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, was declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in March 2023.
However, the Court of Appeal in Abuja, on November 17, 2023, nullified his election and declared Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as the winner. The appellate court ruled that Yusuf was not qualified to contest the election as he was not a member of the NNPP during the election.
Yusuf’s lawyer, Barrister Aminu Sani, confirmed to SaharaReporters that his client has approached the Supreme Court to seek justice and reverse the Appeal Court judgement.
He said that Yusuf has fulfilled all the constitutional requirements to contest the election and that the NNPP has issued him a certificate of membership.
Sani also expressed his dissatisfaction with the discrepancy between the oral and written judgements of the Appeal Court, which has caused confusion among the public.
He said that the certified true copies of the judgement, released on Tuesday, showed that the court upheld Yusuf’s victory and set aside the ruling of the election petition tribunal that sacked him.
He said that the court has asked the lawyers to return the copies for correction, but he insisted that the written judgement is the authentic one.
He said that Yusuf is confident that the Supreme Court will uphold his mandate and restore him as the governor of Kano State. He urged the people of Kano to remain calm and peaceful, as the legal process is still ongoing.
