Uzodimma Wins Imo Governorship Election, Defeats PDP and LP Candidates
The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Governor Hope Uzodimma, has won all 27 local government areas of the Imo governorship election that took place on Saturday.
He defeated his closest rivals, Samuel Anyanwu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Achonu Nneji of the Labour Party (LP), in 27 out of the 27 local government areas in the state.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the results of the election at the State Collation Centre in Owerri, the state capital, on Sunday morning. The state Returning Officer, Prof Abayomi Fashina, who is the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti, presided over the collation process that started around 02:30 am on Sunday.
Uzodimma, who is the incumbent governor of the state, secured a second term in office with a wide margin of votes over his opponents.
According to INEC, the election had a total of 2,419,922 registered voters in the state, out of which 2,318,919 collected their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs). The voter turnout was 51.23%, with 1,239,765 valid votes and 12,345 rejected votes.
After announcing the results of the 27 local government areas, Prof Fashina declared that the collation centre would take a one-hour break before the final declaration of the winner. He urged the agents of the parties and the observers to remain calm and peaceful.
Earlier at the collation centre, the state agent for the Labour Party, Callistus Ihejiagwa, was beaten and thrown out of the venue for raising objections to the results being announced by the Returning Officers from the local government areas.
Following the assault, the agent of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state, Kissinger Ikeokwu, left the venue.
The candidates of the PDP and the Labour Party on Saturday night called for the cancellaton of the election after alleging rigging by the APC with the support of INEC and security agents.
