NiMet Warns of Heavy Rain, Heatwave and Strong Wind in Ekiti, Lagos, Kwara, Ogun, 11 Other States

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a multi-hazard impact-based weather forecast bulletin for the next three days, covering Tuesday to Thursday.

The bulletin warned residents of 15 states of the possibility of heavy rainfall, heatwave and strong wind that may cause damage to lives and properties.

According to the bulletin, the following states are likely to experience moderate to heavy rainfall on Tuesday: Kwara, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo, Ogun, Lagos, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Imo, Abia, Akwa Ibom, Taraba, and Cross River.

The rainfall may lead to flooding, erosion, poor visibility and disruption of road and air transportation.

On Wednesday, the states that may witness moderate to heavy rainfall are: Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Imo, Cross River, Abia, and Akwa Ibom. The rainfall may also result in similar impacts as on Tuesday.

On Thursday, the states that may experience moderate to heavy rainfall are: Benue, Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Taraba. The rainfall may cause flash floods, landslides, mudslides and damage to infrastructure.

The bulletin also alerted residents of some northern states of the likelihood of extremely high temperatures on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The states that may face heatwave conditions are: Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Zamfara, Niger and Sokoto. The heatwave may cause dehydration, heat exhaustion, heat stroke, sunburn and increased risk of fire outbreaks.

The bulletin further warned residents of 13 states of the possibility of very strong winds on Tuesday and Wednesday. The states that may be affected by strong winds are: Borno, Adamawa, Gombe, Yobe, Bauchi, Jigawa, Plateau, Nasarawa, Taraba, Kwara, Kogi, Enugu and Benue. The strong winds may cause damage to roofs, trees, power lines and communication towers.

NiMet advised residents of the affected states to take necessary precautions and follow the weather updates from the agency. NiMet also urged the public to report any weather-related incidents to the nearest authorities.
