VIDEO: Nigerians React as School Proprietress Orders NYSC Member to Kneel Down
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has vowed to investigate a viral video that shows one of its members kneeling down as a form of punishment. The video, which was shared online, has sparked public outrage and condemnation.
The video shows a female corps member being interrogated by a school proprietress and another woman who is not visible in the footage.
The corps member, who speaks in Yoruba, says she was feeling unwell due to her menstrual cycle. The proprietress says she would have understood if she had explained earlier, since she is also a woman.
The video has drawn the ire of many Nigerians who accused some employers of maltreating and bullying corps members at their places of primary assignment (PPA). Some also called for the abolition of the NYSC scheme, which was established in 1973 to foster national unity and integration.
TheCable Lifestyle contacted Eddy Megwa, the national PRO of NYSC, who said the scheme is looking into the matter. He said they are trying to identify where and when the video was recorded, and what led to the incident. He said he could not comment further until they have more information.
“We are auditing to know where it happened. That way, we will be able to find out what the issue is,” Megwa said. “Investigation is going on. I cannot speak until we have information on exactly where it happened. We have to know the circumstances that led to it. They could be playing, they could be serious, I don’t know.”
