No Retreat, No Surrender: Labour Unions Vow to Shut Down Economy over Fuel Subsidy Removal

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has reaffirmed its resolve to embark on an indefinite strike from October 3 to protest the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government.

The TUC, along with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has declared that the country’s economy would be paralyzed until their demands are met.

The organized labour is demanding that the government should implement measures that would alleviate the suffering of the masses caused by the subsidy removal. The labour unions have held several meetings with the government representatives but they have failed to reach an agreement.

The TUC President, Festus Osifo, stated on Arise TV on Wednesday that the strike was their last option, after exhausting all other avenues of dialogue.

He said that President Bola Tinubu had enough time to come up with palliatives that would cushion the impact of the subsidy removal, but he did not.

“Strike is always our last resort and that is why we embarked on this long journey. It was about four months ago that the fuel subsidy was removed.

“For any government that’s concerned about the plight of the people, four months is sufficient time for them to have designed a framework for the way forward.

“So for the House of Representatives that said we should be patient, we have earlier met with the Senate President who promised us that he was going to meet with the President and get back to us in one week but up till now, we have not heard from him.

“We have exhausted all the tools we have and that is why we are deploying the last option.”
