OAU Management Reduces Tuition Fee Hike After Students’ Protest
The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife, Osun State, has announced a slight reduction of the tuition fee increment it imposed in September.
The decision came after the students’ union leaders met with the university authorities on Monday and demanded a 50% cut of the fee hike.
Newsflash Nigeria reported that the university management had increased the tuition fee by 300% in September, citing the need to run the university efficiently. The students, however, rejected the increment and threatened to shut down the school.
According to a statement by the university’s public relations officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, the management has agreed to reduce the tuition fee increment by some percentages as a gesture of goodwill. The statement also said that the students can pay the fee in two equal installments.
The new tuition fee structure is as follows:
- For the students in Humanities, the returning students will pay N76,000 instead of N89,200, while the new students will pay N131,000 instead of N151,200.
- For the students in Sciences and Technology, the returning students will pay N86,000 instead of N101,200, while the new students will pay N141,000 instead of N163,200.
- For the students in Pharmacy and College of Health Sciences, the returning students will pay N109,000 instead of N128,200, while the new students will pay N164,000 instead of N190,000.
The statement urged the students to cooperate with the management and resume academic activities as soon as possible.
