Residents of Ogun Cry Out for Help as Flooding Threatens Their Homes and Properties

Residents of Area 8, OPIC Estate, Agbara, in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, are living in fear and uncertainty as flooding continues to wreak havoc on their community.

The heavy rainfall that has been pounding the area for the past few days has submerged many properties and forced some residents to relocate to safer places.

In a letter to Governor Dapo Abiodun, the residents described their situation as an ‘impending disaster’ and appealed for urgent intervention from the government.

The letter, which was co-signed by the Estate Chairman, Adebowale Odunayo, and the Assistant Secretary, Iziokhai Ohioze, stated that they have been experiencing incessant flooding for a long time and that they have reported the issue to OPIC Management several times without any positive response.

According to them, the lack of drainage systems in the area has aggravated the problem during rainy seasons, resulting in water entering their homes and damaging their buildings. They said that this not only causes financial losses for them as property owners but also compromises the structural integrity of their homes and affects their mental health.

They also expressed concern over the safety and well-being of their children and the elderly among them, who are more vulnerable to the effects of flooding. They said that flooding exposes them to health risks such as waterborne diseases, snake bites, and electrocution.

They acknowledged that flooding is a natural phenomenon, but they argued that it can be minimized with proper planning and infrastructure. They requested the governor’s approval for an immediate upgrade of the entire drainage architecture of the area and the rehabilitation of the roads within the OPIC Estate, especially Roads 411, 800, 808, and 81 which they believe if tarred, would complement the drainage system.

A resident of the area, Adebisi Bamtale, told the Daily Post on Sunday that he is worried about what will happen if the rain does not stop soon. “We don’t know what to do if this rain continues like this. I think all of us may have to relocate at last,” he said.
