Tribunal to Deliver Final Verdict on Tinubu’s Election on Wednesday

The fate of President Bola Tinubu, who won the February 25 presidential election, will be decided by the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT) on September 6, 2023.

The tribunal will deliver its final ruling on the petitions filed by three opposition parties challenging his victory.

The PEPT has been hearing the petitions for six months and will conclude its proceedings on Wednesday.

The Chief Registrar of the Appeal Court, Abuja division, Umar Bangari, announced that the tribunal’s judgement will be televised live by interested TV stations for the public to follow.

Bangari said that the decision to broadcast the final proceedings was made to promote transparency and openness in the judicial process. He said that the public will be able to witness how the tribunal will resolve the issues raised by the petitioners and the respondents.

The petitioners are Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM). They are alleging that President Tinubu’s election was marred by irregularities, malpractices, and rigging.

They are asking the tribunal to nullify Tinubu’s election and declare them as the rightful winners or order a fresh election. Tinubu, who was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) with 8.79 million votes, has denied the allegations and urged the tribunal to dismiss the petitions.

The tribunal’s ruling is expected to be a landmark one in Nigeria’s electoral history. It will also set the stage for a possible appeal to the Supreme Court by any of the aggrieved parties.

The televised ruling of the PEPT is a significant event in Nigerian politics. It is a chance for the public to see how the electoral process works and to hold the tribunal accountable for its decisions. It is also a chance for the petitioners to get a fair hearing and for Tinubu to defend his victory.

The televised ruling is a positive development for Nigerian democracy. It is a step towards greater transparency and openness in the electoral process. It is also a chance for the public to play a more active role in holding the government accountable.
