Tinubu Seeks Senate Approval for NEDC Board Members
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sent a letter to the Senate, requesting the confirmation of the appointment of members of the governing board of the North East Development Commission (NEDC).
The NEDC is a federal agency established in 2017 to coordinate the reconstruction and development of the six states in the northeast region that have been affected by the insurgency of Boko Haram.
The president’s letter was read on the floor of the plenary on Wednesday by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
The letter listed 11 nominees for the board positions, including a chairman, a managing director, three executive directors, and six members representing each of the six states in the region.
The nominees are:
- General Paul Tarfa (rtd), Chairman (Adamawa)
- Mohamed Goni Alkali, Managing Director (Borno)
- Musa Yashi, Executive Director of Humanitarian Affairs (Bauchi)
- Ahmed Abdulsalam Yahaya, Executive Director of Operations (Gombe)
- Dr Abubakar Garba Ileah, Executive Director of Admin and Finance (Yobe)
- Hon Gambo Maikyau, Member (Taraba)
- Abdullahi Abbas, Member (Kano)
- Zaf Steven Ondora, Member (Benue)
- Chief Mutiu Lawal Areh, Member (Lagos)
- Samuel Ifeanyi Onuigbo, Member (Abia)
- Frank Achinike Owo, Member (Rivers)
The president also requested the reappointment of three executive directors who were previously appointed in 2019. They are:
- Musa Yashi, Executive Director of Humanitarian Affairs
- Ahmed Abdulsalam Yahaya, Executive Director of Operations
- Dr Abubakar Garba Ileah, Executive Director of Admin and Finance
The president urged the Senate to give expeditious consideration to his request, in order to enable the NEDC to continue its mandate of rebuilding and developing the northeast region.
