Lawmakers lament as pupils studying under trees in Oyo

Members of the Oyo State House of Assembly, on Tuesday, have lamented over some pupils in the state were studying under the trees.

The lawmakers revealed that most of the schools in the state are currently experiencing an infrastructural deficit.

Newsflash Nigeria understands that pupils in about thirteen primary schools in Iwajowa Local Government Area of the state were having their classes under the trees.

The lawmakers advised the state governor, Seyi Makinde, to introduce school governing boards in public primary schools in the State.

The lawmakers explained that the introduction of the school governing boards was necessary in order to address infrastructural decay in public primary schools across the State.

The lawmakers made this appeal during their plenary held in Ibadan.

The plenary was presided over by the Speaker, Adebo Ogundoyin.

The lawmakers maintained that most of the schools in the State are currently experiencing an infrastructural deficit.

The appeal was sequel to a motion brought to the House by one of the lawmakers, Hakeem Adedibu.

The motion centred on the need to construct and improve classroom buildings in structurally deficient schools in Iwajowa Local Government and other parts of Oyo State.

Adedibu, in his motion, said that pupils in about thirteen primary schools in Iwajowa Local Government Area were presently having their classes under the trees.

He said that this was the situation in most of the public primary schools in the State.

The lawmakers urged Makinde to introduce the school governing boards, as part of strategies to address the infrastructural deficiency in the schools.

They also called on the State government to encourage the formation of old students’ associations in primary schools.

They added that this will help to provide a platform for alumni members to give back to their alma mater.

The lawmakers, in their various contributions to the motion, decried the state of infrastructure in primary schools across the State.

Speaker of the Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin, while speaking, called on Makinde to come up with more ways of addressing infrastructural decay in primary schools in the State.

He urged the State government to bring more individuals, organizations and religious bodies on board.

Ogundoyin said, “We are bothered by the sorry state of infrastructure in our primary schools.

“Education is expensive, hence we are urging the State government to bring more individuals, organizations and religious bodies on board in the onerous task of enhancing the standard of education in our primary schools”.
