Buhari govt speaks on a purported plan to delay December salary for Civil Servants

President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government has said there is no truth about a possible delay in the payment of December salary to civil servants in the country.

Newsflash Nigeria had earlier reported that the FMC Keffi’s head of finance and accounts, Samson Adegoke had advised the police officers and civil servants in the federal government’s ministries, departments, and agencies to spend their November salaries wisely because their December pay may not come in until January 2022.

The circulars sends to workers show their Christmas plans have been thrown into disarray with a delay in their November pay.

“Due to the recurrent trends of shortfall in budgetary allocations and its attendant effect on the payment of salaries in recent times across various MDAS, the management wishes to regrettably inform all staff that there might be an envisaged delay in payment of December 2021 salary in the Centre,” said a memo signed by the FMC Keffi’s head of finance and accounts, Samson Adegoke, dated November 25.

Mr Adegoke, while assuring the civil servants and heads of departments of the FMC’s efforts to forestall “unnecessary delays,” warned them to be prudent about their spending as the yuletide season sets in.

“Accordingly, all staff are advised to be cautious in spending their November 2021 salary and to make provisions for Christmas celebrations therefrom,” the memo advised.

But the federal government denied the report said there is no truth about a possible delay in the payment of December salary to civil servants in the country.

The Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF) said the circular upon which the rumour is based didn’t originate from the government.

In a statement on Thursday evening signed by the Director (Communications), OHCSF, AbdulGaniyu Aminu said the initial circular is fake.

Aminu added that Dr. S.A. Adegoke who signed the said circular is not a staff of the office and the content of the circular should be disregarded by civil servants and the general public.

The statement added that those behind the so-called circular are just out to cause mischief by spreading false information.

It reads: “The attention of the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation has been drawn to a circular purportedly issued by the office advising civil servants to exercise caution in spending their November salary because of the possible delay in the payment of their December salary.

“The fake news has unfortunately been published in some newspapers and some social media platforms without verifying. For the avoidance of doubt, it must be stated that the office at no time issued any such circular in respect of salary.

“The Nigerian Civil Servants and the general public are hereby advised to disregard the contents of the fake circular as the work of mischief-makers.

“Furthermore, the said signatory to the circular, one Dr. S.A. Adegoke is not a staff of the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation as there is no record of such an officer in the office.

“It stands to reason therefore that those behind the so-called circular are just out to cause mischief by spreading false information for reasons best known to them.

“It bears restating therefore that:

(a) The so-called circular is nothing but fake news;

(b) No such circular was written or emanated from the office;

(c) The general public should please disregard the news for what it is: a tale told by those out to cause unnecessary panic and disaffection among Civil Servants; and

(d) That the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation will continue to place a high premium on the welfare of workers.”
