9th Assembly: Fear In Gbajabiamila’s Camp As Fresh Permutation Work Against Him

Femi Gbajabiamila, the majority leader of the House of Reps and a leading aspirant to the speakership position of the green chambers seems to have suffered a huge setback in his bid to becoming the speaker of the lower chambers of the National Assembly come June 10 when the president has given a proclamation for the 9th National Assembly to be inaugurated.

The member representing Surulere 1 federal constituency of Lagos state in the lower chambers of the National Assembly and whose candidature was recently endorsed by Many state governors across party lines including Gov Nyesome Wike of Rivers and Gov Elrufai of Kaduna is set to face his biggest opposition from his home base, the southwest region where many top politicians and house of Reps members have vowed to repay him and Tinubu for the role they played in ensuring that Senator Mulikat Adeola Akande who was the preferred candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the speakership position of the 7th assembly did not emerge victorious.

The leading role Tinubu and Gbajabiamila played in mobilising opposition members of the House of Reps especially the members from the southwest to ditch Mulikat Adeola Akande and rather vote for Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, the current governor of Sokoto state as speaker of the 7th house of reps.

Senator Mulikat Adeola Akande, a leading political figure in the Southwest region is reported to have swung into action to have her own pound of flesh on Gbajabiamila for frustrating her political ambitions in the past.

The source from the southwest region who spoke to newsmen correspondent on the condition of anonymity said, “Senator Mulikat views this as an opportunity to repay Gbaja and Tinubu and make them pay for their diservice to and betrayal of the Southwest region in 2011.

You will recall that it was Gbajabiamila acting on a script written by Tinubu who frustrated her efforts at becoming the speaker of the house of reps in 2011 even when we have packaged and sold her ambition to the then President Goodluck Jonathan who was already drumming support for the realisation of her aspirations.

They mobilised for Tambuwal instead.” Asked if it would fly as Senator Mulikat is no longer a member of the house of reps or even of the National Assembly at at large, the source replied, “It doesn’t matter whether she is still a federal lawmaker or not, politics is all about relevance and contact. As i speak with you, all the opposition reps members-elect especially of the southwest extraction have already being briefed on this. Tinubu and Gbajabiamila will be shocked at the floor on the 10th of June when the 9th national assembly will be inaugurated.”

Source also uncovered a devastating anti Gbaja/Wase campaign in their quest to emerge as the speaker and deputy speaker of the house of reps as many house members are already skeptical of voting a Muslim/Muslim ticket to occupy the two top positions in the house of reps. Some members are also of the strong view that equity, justice and fairness be observed in the election of the principal officers of the national assembly hence the North Central which has not occupied the position in the past or the Southeast who do not have any top government officer in the current political dispensation be sponsored to occupy the position instead of a southwesterner like Gbajabiamila since his region already produced the Vice president of the federal republic of Nigeria.
